This hat and its companion cowl feature a stitch pattern that resembles turbulent air currents. At first sight, the stitch pattern may look complex, but it’s really a simple pattern repeat, shifted and reversed in a predictable order. Once you get the rhythm of the stitch pattern, you’ll find yourself sailing along with ease.

Stitch pattern provided both as a chart and written instructions.

Sizes

Hat: Child (Adult S/M, Adult M/L) — 16 (18 ¼, 20 ½)" / 40.5 (46.5, 52) cm

Finished Length: 6 ½ (8, 8)" / 15.6 (20.5, 20.5) cm

Suggested ease: 1-3" / 2.5-7.5 cm negative ease. Shown in size
Adult S/M, 18 ¼" / 46.5 cm on a 20" / 51 cm circumference head.

Supplies

Hat: 143 (163, 179) yd / 131 (149, 164) m Madelinetosh Tosh Sock (100% Merino) – 395 yd /
361 m in color Grasshopper.

  • US 3 / 3.25 mm knitting needle in preferred style for small circumference knitting in the round*
  • Stitch markers
  • Cable needle
  • Tapestry needle
* Or size to obtain gauge


Gauge

22 sts x 31 rows over 4" / 10 cm in Stockinette stitch on project
needles. Wash and lay swatch flat before checking gauge.

Note: Pieces are knit in lace and ribbing and the gauge varies based on blocking method so stockinette gauge is given to help determine the appropriate needle size for both projects.
