Well, my week and a half vacation/holiday is nearly over. Tomorrow, I'm back to work. I am going to miss all the naps.

I think I'm going to be able to unveil a new Twist design very very soon. For now, I'll simply post a couple mosaics from the year so far.

New Year's Eve

1. Just after midnight, 2. Riding public trans into town, 3. Upstairs at Fez, 4. Angels, 5. Some random guy, 6. Dancin' queen, 7. Leo with interesting shadows on face, 8. After midnight, 9. The bar at Embers, 10. Someone's bare foot print on a very cold night., 11. Walking back to the Max, 12. Downtown Portland, 13. A very packed max

It was a relatively tame, but totally fun evening. I still can't believe how well mannered all the folks were on that terribly packed Max train. But, gosh, you gotta love a city that runs the public transportation for free on New Year's Eve and keeps train running until 3 in the morning, to make sure everyone can get home.

A snowy hike

We couldn't bring Panda to the ocean, with her mouth still healing, so we packed up for the mountains. Alas, the route we wanted to take was closed off because of a mud slide, so we weren't able to get to our desired destination. In the end, we just pulled into a random street with a big open field, and ran the girls around.

On the way home, we found a little yarn shop, bought some yarn and got a recommendation for a great restaurant. Of course, we saved a few bites of our entrees for the girls.

It was such a relaxing week and a half off (minus the bit of worry with Ms. Bear.) It was the perfect mix of getting things done and doing lots of nothing.

I hope everyone's new year was exactly what they wanted it to be.

Thea came along to see Panda off, mostly because if you leave the house with Panda while Thea is home, she bangs on the door of her crate and screams like she's being tortured and it breaks my heart. I'm such a softie.

On the way home, Thea seemed really sad not to have her big sister there.

I know the feeling

I spent the next 6 hours fearing that the doctor would call me and tell me something went horribly wrong and he was so sorry.

But my fears were unwarranted.

Panda did great, her teeth look lovely, and she couldn't have been more happy to come home. She even seemed happy to see her bratty little sister.

Thanks for all the well wishes.

On Christmas eve, we noticed a bit of swelling on the right side of Panda's face. It wasn't too bad, and she was in great spirits, so we didn't worry, but we kept an eye on it.

By Christmas day, she was very lopsided

Still, her mood was great, she was eating, playing, and generally feeling fine. We called off our plans to go hiking, just to be sure, and decided to closely monitor her for any signs that might suggest an emergency. We'd gladly eat the cost for an emergency vet visit on Christmas, but if we could avoid it and go to her normal vet, that was definitely preferable.

I consulted with a friend who works with dogs, and she assured me that it was something that could wait and an emergency visit wasn't necessary. It was a little nerve wracking but we kept a close eye on her all day.

Panda seemed happy enough that we walked to the neighboring park for a little play in the snow.

1. Leo and the girls, in front of his snowman, 2. Happy girls, running in the snow, 3. Thea goes all Exorcist with her head, 4. Rolling a big snow ball, 5. Tug-o-war, 6. Rolling the second snow ball, 7. Just added snow ball II, 8. Rubbing a sore face in the cool snow, 9. Refining his artwork, 10. Adding the final snow ball, 11. shaping the head, 12. Almost done, 13. Romp in the snow

Throughout the day, her swelling increased, until that evening when her cheek started draining. The pressure was off but by morning, Panda was a little less bright eyed and bushy tailed. The vet was able to see her first thing, so we packed up the girls and headed to the doctor.

Little miss squishied face

After checking her out, the doctor decided that it was probably her cracked molar and that it had abscessed. He gave her some meds for the swelling, infection and pain, and we are scheduled for an extraction next week.

But we didn't let Thea off the hook, on this trip, while we were there, we had them expel some of her, *ahem* glands. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, I will spare you. If you know what I'm talking about, you KNOW what I'm talking about. Apparently, she let out quite a little squeal of displeasure when the procedure was being performed. This is a new thing for us. Panda is far too proper and clean to ever have stinky gland problems. Somehow, it just seems appropriate that the little stinker would.

This is my third winter in Portland. From what I can tell, winter is a lot of rain. We get an occasional bout of hail that leaves the yard looking like you just murdered a bean bag chair, and there might be a little flurry of flakes, but it rarely lasts long and almost never accumulates.

Well, this weekend, we got a little taste of some of the winter I remember from my childhood in New Hampshire. Of course, if I still lived there, I'd be holed up in a hotel until my power returned. This is way more my speed, for winter.

Can you see the couple in the background, trying to build a snowman?

The girls get seven kinds of frisky when their paws touch snow. Panda loves to roll in it and Thea wants to eat it.

These shots are from early in the day, so you can still see the grass peeking through, at the park. By nightfall, the roads were compressed into solid ice and there was about 5" of snow everywhere else. Anyone without chains on their tires were finding themselves struggling to stay on the roads.

I guess it's a testament to how rarely it snows here. I don't ever recall having chains on my car, in New Hampshire or Massachusetts. Roads are plowed and sand or salt are applied as needed. It took most of the night for that to happen around here.

Man alive, I love working from home.

Luckily, Leo's a real boyscout, and had his chains on before the sun set, yesterday, which means he just had to do a quick preflight check before leaving for work, and he was good to go.

Thea oversaw the process.

You know, sometimes I talk all knowingly about how there isn't one right needle and you should swatch and blah blah blah, but you know what? I love metal needles. I use them almost exclusively. I like that they are smooth and fast and many have sharp little points. It's all about efficiency to me. Wood needles seem slow and plodding to me, like swimming in molasses. Plastic needles range, but are often just too grippy for my taste and certain brands are all wobbly bendy.

But you know what? I've been hating this sleeve I'm working on for a particular pattern. It's lace, worked in the round, on a small circumference. The lace requires working 3 stitches together, and every other row, those three stitches shift, which means that stitches have to be moved between needles. Worse, it's laceweight black yarn worked on big ol' needles.

I tried two circulars, but the problem with this method is that it's nearly impossible to move stitches back and forth between needles at such a tight circumference. One, essentially, has to use a cable needle or spare DPN. Talk about inefficient.

So then I moved to some metal DPNs. I'm sure there'll be gasps of disgust but I have absolutely no issues knitting with Susan Bates DPNs. The really small ones are a bit bendy, but anything above a US#1 seems to work fine and they come in pretty colors. Who could complain? Unfortunately, working with laceweight yarn and these heavy needles was almost as bad as the 2-circs. The weight of the needles was so great that I couldn't maintain a comfortable tension on the yarn. This got even worse between needles, forcing me to maintain a constant death grip on the yarn while also fearing that the needles would make a run for it. I finally had to admit it, I was using the wrong needle. I'm a stubborn woman.

I went over to the local craft store, picked up some cheapo bamboo needles, and it's been smooth sailing since. The wood's grippiness keeps all the needles in place and the weight is light enough that the thread isn't pulled from my fingers as I work. I'm not a convert, I'm just reminded that sometimes I have to step out of my perceived comfort zone.

And since my 1970s ripple afghan has received so much attention, here she is again, albeit a bit rumpled. Oh, there are also a couple of dogs next to her.

It's always good to have one little mindless project on the needles that can go anywhere. I've been toting this little project around for a month now, and mostly working it on the train, when my more involved projects would be unmanageable.

The final piece is really dense, so very warm, long enough to wrap around the neck several times, and bright and cheery enough to counteract the winter gloom in Portland.

That's the same stretch of beach we almost always go to. We would have spent all day there, but the rip current was pretty strong and Thea is not the most buoyant dog around. Visions of her being pulled into the briny deep made us uneasy.

We thought the day might be shot, after about a half hour, but we decided to do a little hiking to make the long drive worth the while.

Off we went to Ecola State Park, where we had nearly the whole trail to ourselves. The fog made the view look like a fantasy.

<img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3270/3072062109_fc250b12ea.jpg" width="400"alt="Trail to Indian Beach in Ecola State Park" />
By comparison, this is how it looked the first time we went.

But I think there's a pretty good reason why we had the whole trail to ourselves. By the end of the hike, the four of us were coated in mud.

1. IMG_0187.JPG, 2. IMG_0151.JPG, 3. IMG_0149.JPG, 4. IMG_0192.JPG

We learned that Panda would make every effort to go around giant puddles of mud, while Thea would aim for them. Either way, there was no keeping clean, but we definitely appreciated Panda's efforts to stay clean.

We had to put the girls in the car, however we decided that a dip in the ocean before we leave would be much preferred to a bath, when we got home. So we headed back to Seaside and played a wee bit of fetch.

It was good to see their beautiful white coats again.

As we were clipping on everyone's leash, someone nearby said, "Did you see the elk?" and pointed to the hill ahead. I looked up and saw three little heads, just showing above the ledge. Leo had the the good sense to go put the dogs in the car, and I walked over to where a small crowd had formed, a safe distance from the herd.

We've seen our share of elk at the coast, but never this many at once. Such a great way to end a fantastic ocean trip.

Our day wasn't over with the ocean, though. My sweet guy treated me to a delicious meal to celebrate our 8 year anniversary.

It was a great meal, beautiful view and, of course, perfect company. And for the toast, he said "Here's to 8 years, 8 years more and nothing more."
Of course, I refused to toast to that nonsense, so he said, ok, well, what if we lay the second 8 on its side?"

Cute.

There's a reason I keep him around.

It's a shame to have this lovely long weekend end, but it was great while it lasted.

Most images can be clicked to zoom.

Perhaps you need to submit sketches of a pattern for consideration in a publication,
or maybe you are just designing for yourself and want to play with color combinations,
regardless of your reasons, you don't need a full set of pencils and markers
to colorize your drawings and if you use Photoshop, you change the colors over and over again, without having to do a new drawing. I'm going to cover some very simple techniques,
that you can build upon to create your own style.

As with all my tutorials I
want to make it clear that I'm not an expert, these are just some suggestions.
I don't supply support for these methods and cannot offer instructions for
older versions or open source alternatives to the program indicated. I am using
Photoshop CS3 on a Mac, but will try to provide PC equivalents when I know
  them.

And, of course, if you have any suggestions, leave them in the comments. I
  love learning new tips.

Start your sketch

You may download my original, unretouched sketch here,
and play along at home. The final document is available here.

I generally do my sketches on paper. I'm not a fine artists, so I often use
catalogs as reference for the way clothing drapes and the correct proportions
for the human form. I don't like to actually trace images, because I think
this looks too stiff. I prefer to just use the image as a visual reference
and draw the images by hand. You should do what produces the best results
  for you.

In this case, I want to draw a skirt. I looked around online and found this
  cute
number over at the Gap. I lightly drew my sketch with pencil then outlined
only the most important features with a thick dark marker.

If you have a scanner, great, scan it. I have one but I generally just take
a picture with my digital camera, like I have here. The lighting was atrocious
that day, so the paper is pretty dark, but that's totally fine.

Now, open the image in Photoshop.

Clean up sketch

Choose IMAGE | ADJUST | LEVELS

Choose AUTO. This is going to get you some pure whites and blacks on your
  image.

You may want to enlarge this next image to see how the Levels have been adjusted. You will need to move the white arrow quite far to the right and
the gray arrow very close to the black one. Nudging the black arrow right a
little will darken the lines. This may not be necessary if you used black instead
  of blue ink.

Since your image is in color, it'll probably still have a slight hue to it,
in places, the next step will fix that up.

Go to IMAGE | MODE | GRAYSCALE to strip out the color.

Go back to your Levels CMND+L (CTRL+L on PC) and really darken the lines by
dragging the black pointer to the right.

Switch your image back to RGB mode. Your image should now have a dark outline
and a white background. If there are a few areas that are wonky, just use the
eraser tool to clean them up.

NOTE: If you don't use a thick marker to create your original lines, it's going to
be harder to get a good clean outline and a crisp white background.

I usually adjust the canvas size (the size of the whole image) at this point,
being sure that white is set as my background color.

You'll want to make the page big enough that you can include swatches and notes on the side, to better explain what you are going for.

Use the brush tool (click
the letter B) to close any gaps in your line drawing. If you use the eyedropper
  tool
  (click
the letter i) to sample the line nearby, you'll be able to match the color.
Click the closed and open brackets
([]) to increase and decrease the size of the brush to match your original
  drawing lines.

Notice that I also added in a missing line to the front pleat. This is your
chance to get all your little details fixed up.

Quick tip: To draw a straight line, such as the line on the inside of
the pleat, click at the first point, hold down the shift button, then click
on the destination point. In this case, I clicked from the point on the hem
to the top of the pleat.

Copy and paste the drawing to a new layer (or you can drag the background
layer to the icon for a new layer in the layers palette). Set the layer blending
mode to MULTIPLY by clicking the word NORMAL at the top of the palette and
  choosing
MULTIPLY from the list. Double click the name of the layer to give it a more
  meaningful name.

Setting the layer to MULTIPLY makes it possible to place color below
the drawing, without having to clear out all the white areas of the drawing,
  yet
  maintains
  the dark
  lines.

Block out major color areas

Add a new layer. I'm calling it, "Primary Color" as it will be the
dominant color in the garment. This layer must appear BELOW the linework layer.
  With
  your Magic Wand tool (click
the letter W) click an area that should be a primary color. Holding down SHIFT, you can click on any other areas that should be the same color. You may need to adjust your wand settings if it isn't selecting the area fully. If you click and area and it selects more than the area you inteneded, you may have a gap in your sketch. Use your brush tool to close any gaps.

Set your foreground color to any color at all. It's ok if it's not the actual
color you want it to be, it just has to be something other than white or black.
  I've chosen purple.

With your skirt still selected AND with the Primary Colors layer active,
fill the selected area by typing, OPTION+DEL.

If you prefer, you can fill using the EDIT | FILL option from the menu or
  the Bucket tool.

Repeat with the secondary color creating a new layer for it so that the two
  colors have their own layers.

Do this once more for the skin.

Shading

First, add a new layer over the top of the skin layer and call it "Skin
  Shading"
or something meaningful to you. Set the blending of the layer to MULTIPLY,
just like you did with the original sketch layer.

With the Brush Tool [B] ,
set the brush settings to about 10-20% opacity and a good soft edged brush
that is about the same width as the legs in the drawing. Your options
might look a little like this:

In the skin layer, hold down CMND (CTRL on PC) and select the little thumbnail
of the layer. This should select just the non-transparent areas of the layer.
You could achieve the same effect with the magic wand.

Go back to the shading layer and begin to add just a bit of shading to the
edge of the legs. Because you selected the legs shape, the brush will not
draw outside of the selection. This will allow you to gently apply the shading
to just the edges. You can adjust the brush size with the brackets ([]) and
can delete the shading with the eraser, as needed.

Repeat this exact same process with the other two layers, making sure that
each shading layer is it's own layer above it's corresponding color layer.

If you were extra spiffy, you could certainly add a highlight layer too.
With a highlight layer, you'd want to set the layer blending to SCREEN instead
  of MULTIPLY.

Refining your colors

So now you have a base with which to play with your colors. Let's select the
Primary Color layer which is currently purple. At the bottom of the Layers
palette is a little italic fx. Click that and choose, COLOR OVERLAY.

The system always defaults to red. Click the red swatch to choose a new color.

This will bring up the color picker from which you may choose a color you
like. I'm going to pick a gray shade.

You can repeat this process with the secondary color. Here, I'm choosing a
  lilac shade.

At any point, you can go back and change those colors again, until you find
a combo you are happy with.

After that, you can apply a gradient to the background, to give the illustration
  a little depth.

And then, just add your name and copyright info and any further details you wish
to point out.

Clearly, this is a very simple explanation. As you add texture and lace, your
drawing and its details will become more complicated to colorize. In all those
cases, though, it's simply a matter of laying down the color on individual
layers. After that, all the shading and color adjustments remain the same.
You can also scan in or photograph your swatch and use that to fill in your
  drawing.

Once again, you can download the original sketch here and the final document
here.

I hope you enjoyed the tutorial.

You know that YouTube thing that's all the rage with the kids today -- the ones who won't pull their pants, up, turn their music down, and get off my lawn? Yah, well sometimes those kids make these talkies and they post them on the YouTube and a subset of those ain't half bad.

Whilst perusing one day, I found this delightful knitter. Actually, it was a while ago that I found her but she's only recently outed herself as a knitter, so, VOILA, it's now legit fodder for the knit blogger (poetic license in effect with that near-rhyme.)

So here she is, singer, song writer, ukulele player, and hat knitter, Julia Nunes

That was one of her own songs, but she does some beautiful covers as well.

Google Reader would show updates and my feedburner feed that uses my primary feed, was updating in Bloglines (that's the 3rd feed) but the two directly out of my blog, were not updating.

I was sad.

I missed you guys.

So to any of you who haven't been by since before the election, welcome back. Sorry for the backlog.

To those of you who have had no problem getting my feed, well, here are a couple of shots from Thea's first trip to the beach back on April 29, 2007, for <s>my</s> your enjoyment.

Love love love love love.

Love!

The colors are really rich and the way the two fibers (bamboo and merino) take up dye, produces a ton of depth in the singles. Also, I love purple.

The first bobbin has about a sock weight singles on it. The second bobbin (currently in progress) has a much thinner singles, maybe lace weight. My plan is to ply the thick singles with two strands of the thin singles, fed from a center pull ball, though I might just do a single strand of each singles. I'm kind of on the line about it.

I love this colorway so much, it makes me sad I don't have more time to spin, but it's a nice little treat when I need to rest from my deadline work.

And since we're talking spinning, I thought I'd show you my pretty calendar from Spindlicity. Janel sent it to me along with my payment for the neck warmers I designed.

This will be going up right next to my computer, in the office. It's a lovely reminder that El Matchador isn't my own spinning tool, in the house.

The new Twist Collective is up and I think you'll agree that it's a fantastic issue. There are so many great designs by so many great designers.

My own contribution is Dietrich

Dietrich is a simple felted cloche with a subtle, asymmetrical brim. When I told Kate I really wanted to adorn it with a feather, she said it was a great idea and said she had just the feather, if I hadn't picked one out already. I think she did an amazing job styling it. I love it.

The only problem with designing felted items is that you can't know if you got it just right until it's too late to undo what you've done.

The hat starts big and floppy

The first version had a VERY dramatic brim, which is fun, but not as practical, so I knit a second version, that you see in the pattern shots, and kept the original to play with.

Using a simple back stitch, I embroidered some vines around the brim. I found a ribbon that picked up the shades of the embroidery and added that as well. I think it's cute and I'll definitely find more excuses to embroider on knitting.

Dietrich not your thing? There's oodles of great content over in the winter edition, so go on over and check it out.
